About us

OUR STORY.....

Welcome to Nowra Church of Christ, a church family that is part of the Churches of Christ movement in NSW.
Our journey began on Easter Sunday 1969 when we gathered in the Country Women's Association (CWA) Hall on Berry Street, Nowra. Back then, Wollongong Church of Christ lent us incredible support to establish ourselves firmly.
In 1982, October 2nd, we were able to meet for the first time in our own building after a long journey of faithfulness and God’s provision in our story. We continue to gathering here even to this day, blessed by the provision of God on those who walked with the Lord before us, here at Nowra Church of Christ.
Today, our church thrives as a close-knit community, deeply devoted to their faith in Jesus and committed to living out the values of the Kingdom of God in their everyday lives. We're excited about the journey ahead and the transformation that awaits the city of Nowra through God's boundless love.

OUR IDENTITY.....

We Love God, We Love People (Our WHY)

In Matthew 22:34-40 we find ourselves guided by Jesus as he declares a powerful identity piece for those who would profess faith in him. In this passage, a religious scholar asks Jesus about the greatest commandment in the law.
“But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees with his reply, they met together to question him again. One of them, an expert in religious law, tried to trap him with this question: “Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?” Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:34-40 (NLT)
These two commandments hold immense significance for us here at Nowra Church of Christ and we seek to be guided by them in everything we do. They are our WHY, the reason that we are here in this town and who God has called us to be. Here's why:
  • The first commandment calls for wholehearted love and devotion to God. It emphasizes that our relationship with God should be characterised by a deep love for him that encompasses every aspect of our being—our heart, soul, and mind. At Nowra Church of Christ, we prioritise cultivating a genuine and passionate love for God. We seek to reflect this love for God in our worship, teaching, prayer, and all other spiritual practices.
  • The second commandment instructs US, as believers, to love our neighbors as ourselves. Jesus states that this commandment is equally important as the first one. We as a community look to embrace this principle by cultivating a life guided by love and compassion towards others, both within and outside the church community. We believe this love extends to all people, regardless of their background, ethnicity, social status, or beliefs.
By centering our identity around these two commandments, Nowra Church of Christ is a church family that lives out the core teachings of Jesus. Every decision, program, and ministry is driven by the principles of love for God and love for others. This identity piece is our WHY.
